Call For Clampdown On Illegal Car
Racing

Bandar Seri
Begawan - Members of the public are calling for a total
clampdown on illegal car racings, which are believed to have taken
place at certain well-known locations.
They suggest that humps be
constructed in these areas to prevent such races from being carried
out. The illegal sprints allegedly take place after midnight on some
nights, particularly during the weekend.
This move is necessary as the lives
of the racers as well as innocent road users are -put at risk. "There
have been instances where young people were killed in such
activities," they said.
One motorist told the Bulletin that
he was startled to see cars zipping past him at breakneck speed while
he was on the road, only to find out that it was an illegal car race.
"I was shocked when several vehicles
overtook me dangerously and nearly caused an accident. I later found
out that they were involved in illegal car racings or sprints," he
said.
The national television channel has
already highlighted the issue of illegal racing and relevant
authorities have also clamped down on such activities.
"The organisers would only hold such
sprints if they are certain that their activities are not being
closely observed by the authorities." Therefore it is hard to catch
them in the act," they added.
Some residents, meanwhile, called for
organisers to hold legal car races and sprints to deter the younger
generation from holding illegal ones. "Legal cartacings used to take
place in the past and such competitions can combat illegal racings as
young people have avenues to release their desires.
"If we allow them to race legally,
they may even one day with proper training become world-class racers,"
they said.
They also said that the construction
of car and motorcycle race tracks of international standard would pave
the way for Formula One racing in Brunei, which will ultimately boost
tourism. -- Courtesy of Borneo
