Bruneians Duped By Bogus
Recruitment
By M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The lack of employment opportunities has led several
Bruneians to look for greener pastures abroad. However, this was not
the case for several Bruneians who reportedly applied for non-existing
posts.
According to The New Strait Times,
about 800 applicants responded to an advertisement for work as flight
attendants or cabin crews with an international airline Cathay
Pacific, which is based in Hong Kong.
Applicants turned up for the first
interview in midOctober in Petaling Jaya and 100 applicants were
shortlisted for a second interview.
However, they were asked to pay some
RM500 for registration fees by November and also a further RM 5,000 as
bond for their training, which was scheduled to begin on November 13.
The bond was to ensure that
applicants would continue to work for the company after completing the
training programme.
Most of these short-listed candidates
were sceptical about the deal as it sounded too good to be true. After
they had contacted the international airline company, they were told
that the Cathay Pacific was not carrying out such a recruitment
programme.
Cathay Pacific Airlines Ltd Country
Manager (Brunei and Malaysia) Angela Liew, was quoted as saying in The
Star newspaper, that the airline was not carrying out a recruitment
exercise in Malaysia.
"We have not been carrying out such a
drive for the past 10 years and we don't intend to do so in the near
future," she said, adding that the airline would not hire an agency to
conduct interviews.
Besides Bruneians, people from Sabah
and Sarawak had fallen victim to the bogus scam.-- Courtesy of Borneo
