Widow In Need Of Assistance

Bandar Seri Begawan - While most of the people in the country are celebrating Hari RayaAidilfitri, there is a group of less fortunate people who cannot afford to celebrate the occasion due to dire living conditions.

One of these unfortunate people is a widow in her 70's, Dayang Halus binti Ibrahim, who could not celebrate Hari Raya, as the house she resides in is in a bad condition, with a shaky floor and leaking roof.

The house belongs to her daughter-inlaw and is also occupied by her grandson and his wife and children.

Her grandson and her other children are not in a position to repair the house with their meagre income. Dayang Halus was granted a plot of land in Kampong Mumong three years ago, but this has done little in alleviating her living conditions.

She has to spend about $20 a month towards clearing the land so as to avoid the land from being reclaimed by the authority. To make matters worse, she has borrowed $1,000 to pay for land piling fees and has to pay back monthly in installments with her old-age pension.

The widow has applied for assistance from the relevant authorities, but until now no assistance or aid of any kind has come to her and her family.

While most of the people in the country are busy celebrating Hari Raya, Dayang Halus worries about her bleak and uncertain future. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
