Land Transport Dept To Be
Privatised
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - To cater to the increasing demand for an efficient
public transportation and to actively upgrade the system in order to
provide a more effective service to the public, the Land Transport
Department under the Ministry of Communications will be corporatised
and privatised before 2010.
The move to corporatise and privatise
the department is part of a short-term 20-year plan (2004-2024) of the
Ministry of Communications, RTB reported.
In the report, the ministry said the
public transport system would be actively studied and upgraded from
timee to time to provide an easier, punctual, safe and satisfactory
service.
Following the plan to privatise and
corporatise the department, opportunities will be provided for the
private sector to get involved in the local transportation sector.
The move by the Ministry of
Communications is to increase the involvement of the private sector
through privatisation and liberalisation in various phases in
accordance to the development of the service.
The public transportation system is
an open competition. Through franchising, the quality of the public
transportation service will be more organised and efficient, the
ministry said.
The Land Transport Department is
currently formalising its strategies to realise the vision by year
2010.
The Director of Land Transport said
the main objective of the department is to upgrade the current
services for the comfort of the public.
An efficient, safe and organised
service will be the main criteria for those who wish to get involved
in the land transport industry. One of the main conditions is to
establish a company with credibility and necessary requirements that
is recognised by the Land Transport Department.
The public will stand to gain once
transportation services are enhanced as they will have more choices.
Transportation cost, comfort and safety of the services being offered
will be key areas in attracting customers. -- Courtesy of Borneo
