By Achong Tanjong

Bandar Seri Begawan - A man who tried to escape from a police roadblock by reversing his car at the Muara-Tutong highway was found to be driving without a licence, and having expired road tax and insurance. He was asked to report to the Muara Police Station for further investigation.

The man, who was driving towards Muara, stopped his car after spotting the police roadblock several kilometres' away. He reversed his car in the opposite direction and was chased by the police.

Some 20 personnel from the Muara Police District headed by OCS Insp. Mohd Addly conducted the two-hour roadblock operation on the first day of Hari Raya celebration at Jalan Salar and Muara-Tutong Highway from 10.00pm to 12midnight. OCS Insp. Mohd Addly said the roadblock operation aimed to enhance road safety awareness among motorists and to ensure motorists abide by traffic rules and regulations.

He reminded motorists to drive extra-careful and not to drive at high speed especially on the highway to avoid untoward incidents.

He said the operation aims to prevent crime and smuggling of contraband goods that include illegal fireworks and firecrackers in view of the festive celebration.

The roadblock is not only focused on the car road-tax, tyres, modification, lights but also included checks inside the car, in the car bonnet and on cars driven by suspicious persons.

Most motorists found to have their cars windscreen covered with sunshields (tabir) were asked to remove them in front of the police.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
