Oh Jon Keat Wins Top Prize For Nailing Oz Math Challenge

Bandar Seri Begawan - Thirty students who took part in this year's Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) recently received their prizes at the Multi-purpose Hall of Students Affairs Building, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

Prizes were presented by the guest of honour, Dr Hj Mahali bin Hj Momin, the Director of Schools, Department of Schools, Ministry of Education.

Oh Jon Keat, a student from Chung Hwa Middle School (Kuala Belait) was awarded this year's prestigious AMC medal, an honour given for exceptional achievemeit, which is awarded to only one out of every 10,000 students entered for the competition.

Oh is the sixth Bruneian student to win a medal since the country first participated in the competition in 1991. He also received a trophy sponsored by the Australian High Commission for being the outstanding student in the junior category.

Seven students were awarded AMC Prizes, while 22 students received the Prudence Award, an award given to students in each school with the highest number of consecutive correct responses starting from-the first question.

More than 4,000 students from over 40 secondary schools and colleges in Brunei Darussalam participated in this year's competition.

The competition is an annual international event held to promote achievements in mathematics, which is now entered by students from approximately 40 different countries, including Asean countries.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
