Land Department To Go Private

Bandar Seri Begawan – The Land Transport Department will be corporatised and privatised before the year 2010.

The plan is contained in the short term plan of the Ministry of Communication’s 20-year direction 2004-2024.

To cater the increasing demand for public transportation, the Land Transport Department is actively upgrading their public transportation system to provide a more effective service for the public's everyday use.

Radio Television Brunei (RTB) looks into the efforts by the Land Transport Department in responding to the vision and plan.

According to the Ministry of Communications, the public transport system will be actively studied, and upgrades will be introduced from time to time to provide an easier, punctual, safe and satisfactory service.

With the country's constantly upgraded road system, services have improved.

The existence of modern road system which connects the four districts in the country makes communication much easier, efficient and fast.

This is an advantage to broaden the public Transportation aspect.

With the plan to corporatise the Land Transport Department, opportunities will be available for private sector's involvement in the transportation activities.

Actions by the Ministry of Communications to increase the involvement of the private sector through privatisation and liberalisation are in various phases, in accordance to the development of the service.

The public transportation system is an open competition.

Through franchising, the quality of the public transportation service will certainly be more organised and efficient.

The Land Transport Department is actively arranging strategies to realise the vision by the year of 2010.

The Director of the Land Transport Department said the public bus and taxi service is the main public transportation service.

He also said the main objective of the Department is upgrading the current land transport services for the public's interest in the future.

Quantity alone is not enough to achieve the Ministry's goal to increase the quality of service of the transportation system in this country.

An efficient, safe and organised service will be the main competition for those who wish to be involved in the land transport industry.

Among the conditions for those who want to get involved in the transportation industry is to establish a company with credibility and necessary requirements that are recognised by the Land Transport Department.

For a taxi driver, he must acquire a permit to operate business.

Meanwhile franchisers must be locals who are required to adhere to the conditions set by the Land Transport Department.

For the public who use the service, the increase in public transportation will offer them more choices.

Transportation cost, comfort and safety of the service are among the criteria that will be the choice-decider.

Brunei has potential in many aspects that can be developed within the public transportation system.

The establishment of the Land Transport Governing Body to control and monitor the Land Transport Industry will ease their efforts towards developing the industry further.

In addition, the efforts by every party involved will ensure that the country will be able to realise the vision to further develop the public transportation in Brunei in order to be able to compete with those of developed countries. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
