Bruneian students studying in Cairo celebrated the first day of
Syawal on Tuesday at the residence of Hj Muharam bin Hj Piah, the
Sultanate's ambassador to Egypt.
|
The celebration began with a 'Takbir
Raya', which was recited by Md Asbilee bin Hj Md Ali, a Bruneian
student studying at the University of Al-Azhar in Cairo. This was
followed by 'Sunat Aidilfitri' prayers.
There was also a sermon by the
embassy's secretary, Tuan Pg Salimin bin Pg Daud. Among those who were
present were the embassy's third secretary, Tuan Pg Kamaludin bin Pg
Abd Wahab; the Education and Cultural Attaché, Tuan Abdullah bin Hj
Mohammad; and their families.
Celebrating Raya overseas may not be
the same as celebrating the joyous occasion with families and friends
back home.
However, this does not stop Bruneian
students from organising get-togethers and 'open houses' to mark the
festive season.
There are currently 86 Bruneians
studying in the Arab Republic of Egypt. Seventy-three of them are
under a scholarship programme from the Ministry of Religious Affairs,
one student is under a scholarship programme from the Ministry of
Education and the others are private students. Most of them are taking
up Arabic Language as their degree major.
