Big Rush Is On
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Supermarkets, shopping complexes and retail outlets
in Brunei Darussalam recorded booming business in the past few days as
cash-loaded shoppers rushed for last-minute Hari Raya shopping.
Even since civil servants and
pensioners received their payments Saturday, shopping establishments
had been crowded with shoppers neck and neck.
This was made worse when some
employees of the private sector received their pay cheque too as well
as the daily paid civil servants. The salary payments had definitely
stretched the purchasing ability of such employees to the limit as
they give the living room the best ever interior design this Hari Raya.
This includes providing extra variety
of cakes, cookies and biscuits for visitors.
A random survey made by the Borneo
Bulletin showed that last-minute shoppers were heading for shopping
complexes, which are essentially one-stop shopping centres such as the
Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex in the capital, The Mall
in Gadong and other establishments.
Shoppers were purchasing ready-made
clothing as it was too late for the tailors.
This is in contrast to last month
when many shoppers still prefer to buy textiles before heading to
their favourite tailors.
Also in great demand, were chicken
and meat as Bruneians usually treated their Hari Raya visitors to
feast in their houses.
Meanwhile, many Bruneians still
headed to neighbouring towns of Limbang and Miri for a one-day Hari
Raya shopping this week, for more choices and better bargains they
say.
"Almost every year my family and I
will go to Miri for Raya shopping as I notice that the sales
promotions there are more attractive especially on the few days before
Hari Raya," said a returning shopper. -- Courtesy of Borneo
