Tinkerbell Marks 61st UN Day
By Tony Alabastro

Bandar Seri Begawan - Tinkerbell Learning School marked the 61st anniversary of the United Nations on Thursday with a song and dance presentation by its students. The school is celebrating UN Day for the 4th straight year.

"Here in Brunei, we have a diverse mix of races and cultures. We teach our children the joy to discover different cultures, learn racial tolerance, and to have a genuine and compassionate understanding of how different people are in the world," said the school principal, Iidil Rahmah.

`Brunei is in a unique position to pass the values of compassion and tolerance to its children because it has a long history of peace, and beneath its culture is a religious tradition that teaches these values.

"In the tiny world of Tinkerbell Learning School, we have the same responsibility towards the children, to be the guardians of these values.

"Every year, we celebrate United Nations Day to encourage children to be aware of other people. Here, they are dressed in various costumes and become aware of other people's lifestyles and cultures," she said.

During the celebration, students from kindergarten to Primary Four waved Asian, Middle East and European flags. They also presented local and foreign dances and sang `It's A Small World' and `Heal the World'.

Next year, the four-year-old school said it is ready to accept Primary Five and Primary Six students, following the Ministry of Education's approval for the advance levels.

Parents who came to see their children's presentation at the function were also given a briefing on financial planning by HSBC Serusop Branch Manager and Associate Financial .Planner (FPAM), Jocelene Basir. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
