By Lyna Mohamad

Bandar Seri Begawan - In view of the upcoming Hari Raya festive season, the Royal Brunei Police Force conducted a press conference yesterday at the Public Relations Unit at the Gadong Police Headquarters.

Attending to media personnel was Head of Public Relations Unit Ag Supt Pg Mohd Roslin Pg Hj Bakar who in his opening note highlighted that the RBPF continuously put up efforts to curb crime and road accidents by executing patrols, road blocks and joint operations with other law enforcement agencies.

All- these efforts cannot be achieved at the required level without strong cooperation from the public in together taking preventive steps, as some crime incidents or road accidents are found to be caused by the victim's negligence, he said.

"In this regard, the RBPF through its Public Relations Unit outlined some preventive measures to be taken while celebrating Hari Raya as it is better to prevent before being struck, particularly during this festive season as we do not want the joy of Hari Raya to turn into sorrow," he added.

Statistics of November 2005, the month of Hari Raya Aid ii Fitri, shows there were a total of 235 road accident cases throughout the nation that amongst all saw 108 cases of vehicle and vehicle accidents, 114 self-accidents, 3 accidents involving vehicle and motorcycle rider, 4 motorcycle self-accidents and 3 accidents involving vehicle and pedestrians.

- While doing shopping always keep cash at a safe place; do not bring too much extra cash; do not carry big amounts of cash; always put handbag/wallet in front or in the front pocket and avoid crowded areas as they are prone to pickpocket activities.

- When leaving the house,.ensure that all windows and doors are closed and locked; switch off all electrical appliances that are not in use; take off the top cover of the cylinder gas; do not leave gardening utensils or whatever items that can be used for break-ins, and keep them at a safe and locked area.

- Always lighten up the surrounding area of the house by switching on lights in the evenings; inform neighbours when leaving the house as well as nearby police stations, if needed, to help keep a lookout or patrol the vicinity.

- While playing fireworks ensure they are bought from local shops that have been given the permission to sell the items; parents and guardians must ensure that the fireworks are suitable with their respective ages and ensure that the children are always accompanied while playing fireworks to prevent from unwanted incidents.

- Public members are also advised to ensure their vehicles are safe to be driven before starting their journey; to abide by the road law and regulations all the time; be considerate and patient considering the increase in vehicles compared to normal days; if feeling tired or sleepy, take sufficient rest and enough sleep before continuing the drive, and do not drive after consuming medicine that can cause drowsiness; do not use mobile phones while driving as this would lessen the driver's attention on the road ahead.

- When leaving the vehicle ensure its windows and doors are locked; do not leave valuables inside the vehicle as it could attract attention and be vulnerable to thieves; park vehicle at a bright area during the night; ensure surroundings are safe before going out from vehicle at a quiet area (particularly women), and ensure your mobile phones are functional for use in emergency calls such as Police hotline 993, Ambulance 991 and Fire and Rescue 995.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
