Notable Showing By Lily's
Musicians In KK Competition
By Ignatius Stephen
BandarS
ei Begawan - They may not be child geniuses. Nor another
budding Beethoven, Mozart or even a Strauss. Nor is the River Kiulap
another Blue Danube.
But if you ever happen to pass by a
certain section of that stretch of water in Kiulap Complex in Bandar
Seri Begawan in the evening you will be rewarded with the strains of
heavenly tunes emanating from a building on the riverbank.
And in the night, you are often
uplifted to another world by the enchanting melodies that fill the
quiet air.
All that is because Lily Chiam and
her businessman husband, Chiam Tun Bun have been at it for years. And
especially for Lily, it has been a labour of love.
It is no wonder then that her musical
endeavours are now bearing fruit not only in Brunei but elsewhere as
well. In a recent international competition, several of her pupils
walked away with top prizes including gold awards.
A musical group from her school
Expression Music Enterprise in Brunei to the just held 14th Music
Festival Competition in Kota Kinabalu bore encouraging results.
Bruneians gave a good account of themselves in the international
competition. Results were uplifting.
"I am so happy and so proud of my
pupils," Lily told the Weekend.
The Brunei group competed with 700
participants from Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Kuching, Singapore and Kuala
Lumpur.
In the piano section a very dedicated
student, Ong Hui Ping, who recently completed her ABRSM Diploma Exam
at Expression Music, received Gold in the Baroque. She was also the
2nd runner up in the Classics as well as in the Romanic sections. She
is now in the UK taking Law and Music
Seven-year-old Chiam Shian Li, one of
the young promising pianists walked away with a Gold award in Classics
Grade 2 and was 1st runner up in Romantic.
In Vocal Youth, Brunei's Cindy Lee
was 1st runner up and in the Youna Section Elaine Valencia was 2nd
runner up. -- Courtesy of Borneo
