Monument To Fallen Warriors
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A national monument to remember those who had fought
and fell during the 1962 rebellion has been suggested by some people
who fought alongside them in protecting the sovereignty of the nation
and the ruler.
They said in Temburong such a
monument has been standing for a while to remember seven warriors who
died protecting the district.
Those who died included the Temburong
District Officer at that time Pg Besar Pg Kulla, policemen Sgt 20 Pg
Alli Pg Ghani and PC 173 Chin Tong Sang, Mohammad Hassan bin Maun (the
brother of the then Brunei Chief Minister Dato Seri PadukaHaji Marsal
bin Maun), Sabli binAmpuan Judah, Abdul Hamid bin Ahmad and Abdul
Ghani bin Abdullah.
The Temburong monument symbolises the
loyalty, sacrifice and co-operation of these seven people.
It also portrays the seven qualities
of patriotic citizens courage, leadership, sacrifice, strength,
suffering, unity and vigilance. "We felt the label on the monument
needs to be changed and if possible the area spruced up so it can be
identified as a national heritage,"-they said.
They also hoped a building will also
be constructed for visitors to learn more about the 1962 rebellion and
the seven people who died in the district.
"The description of the seven people
should be made available to recognise and honour those who gave up
their lives in the cause for peace, freedom and sovereignty of the
nation and its ruler," they said.
They added the families of the seven
warriors should also be given priority in areas such as housing and
education. Some people hoped for the deceased Muslims to be presented
with tahlil and doa arwah especially during this Ramadhan. -- Courtesy of Borneo
