GIBB Lends Helping Hand To Five
Single Mothers
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - As associations and charity bodies in the country are
taking the opportunity to contribute to the less fortunate, single
mothers in Belait District were also not forgotten in the run-up to
the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
The Parent-Youth Movement (Gerakan
Ibu Bapa, GIBB) of Kampong Pandan Mukim Belait contributed $50 to each
of five eligible single mothers residing at the said village,
yesterday. The donations were made to offer assistance to the single
mothers in preparation for the festivity.
The humble contribution was borne out
of proceeds from the Charity Ramadhan stall in Wisma Yakin shopping
building at Kg Pandan. However, according to GIBB Chairman Awg Hj
Zaini bin Hj Munir, the stall received a lack of response from the
public as "appropriate facilities were not available due to lack of
funds".
ButAwg
Hj Zaini expressed hope that the Ramadhan stall will be carried out
again next year withthe aim of assisting the less fortunate people in
the district.
The collective donation was handed
over by the GIBB Chairman to the official of Community Development
Department (JAPEM) Awg Hj Ahad bin Hassan at JAPEM's Belait Office.
The handover was witnessed by the Penghulu of Mukim Belait, Awg Hj
Pungut bin Ali, who is also GIBB's second advisor, and Narcotics
Control Bureau Head Unit Pg Hj Ali bin Pg Hj Shamsudin.
GIBB Kg Pandan Mukim Belait has
carried out various activities since it was formed in April 2003 as a
pilot project for Belait District to assist His Majesty's Government
in preventing drug abuse among the local communities.
Recent activities include cleaning
campaigns at Los Tanjung and Mile 3 Islamic cemetery sites, a forum
ceremony for youths at the Kg Pandan mosque, sports charity festival
for SMARTER, a sponsored walkathon to raise funds for Pusat Bahagia
Eric Goh Belait and a mass aerobics session in Pandan Lima.
Hj
Zaini meanwhile noted that GIBB would continue to provide assistance
in all organisational activities that benefit youths and communities.
