Shining On For Raya
By Sonia K.
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The humble oil lamp might just come in handy for Hari
Raya, as advice comes to use electricity judiciously to avoid
blackouts and to top up credit of pre-payments now.
|
The Electrical Services Department
yesterday advised the public that during the upcoming festive
season, they should use electricity wisely so as not to waste it
for future sustainable resources, said Head of Corporate Planning
and Services Hj Abdul Rahman Hj Modin.
According to statistics from the
Electrical Services Department on the peak load demand pattern
over Hari Raya for the year 2005 in Gadong and Lumut combined, the
highest peak demand over the Hari Raya period is on the fifth or
sixth day and this has been consistently so over the last few
years. And it will also be expected to be so this year.
He alluded to some people who
when they go out Raya visiting still leave the air-conditioners
on, which is strongly not advisable.
"This is not just because they
will have to spend more money paying their bills but also in terms
of safety it can cause some unexpected mishap such as fires," he
said.
"Also if people consume more
energy, that means we will have to build more power stations,
which will in turn consume more fuel," he added. |

Another issue is when people install
decorative lights, usually done on the eve of Raya and when this
happens, some homes will face blackouts. They then call up the
electrical services to send someone over to fix the problem, but
if many homes face this problem, there may not be enough staff to
go around.
Therefore it is advisable for
people to put up their decorative lights earlier to avoid this
problem, commented Customer Service Engineer at the Electrical
Services Department Hj Amrinal Hj Amir. |
As for pre-payment consumers, some of
them take it for granted that the remaining credit is enough to cover
for Hari Raya. Then some will call the Electrical Services Department
during the first day of Raya to say their electricity has been cut off
(because their credit has finished).
With counters to be closed on the
first two days of Raya, it will be very difficult for them to purchase
their electricity credit. "This is why from time to time, the'
department strongly advises consumers to buy credits early or purchase
a spare for emergency.
The Electrical Services Department
would also like to take the opportunity to wish all Muslims in the
country a 'Selamat Hari Raya' and would also like to thank the
consumers for their support. --
