Kayu Gaharu Suspects Remanded 2 Weeks
By Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - Three Malaysian nationals were brought to the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday to face a charge of collecting 'kayu gaharu' from the Temburong Forest Reserve.

The defendants, Riving bin Padan, 25, Tadam bin Gaten, 18, and Mardonny bin Balang, 20, however, were ordered to be remanded for two weeks pending the completion of investigations.

The trio allegedly committed the offence sometime between October 13 and October 16 this year by collecting the forest produce, scientifically known as Aquilaria beccariana, which is an offence punishable under section 26(i) of the Forest Act and read with section 34 of the Penal Code (Chapter 22).

They also faced an immigration charge of entering Brunei Darussalam without a valid pass. The case is to be mentioned again on November 1. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
