By Lyna Mohamad
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Some $73,542.80 worth of drugs were seized by the
Narcotics Control Bureau in three separate drug raids executed this
month in the Brunei Muara District.

Throughout the month of October as
Muslims perform fasting obligations, the bureau's law enforcers
stayed vigilant in making a series of arrests related to
trafficking of drugs carried out in this holy month of Ramadhan.
The first raid was executed on
October 5, 2006, in Kg Setia, Mukim Sungai Kebun, where a
46-year-old drug trafficker from Kg Ayer was nabbed along with two
men believe to be involved in an illegal drug syndicate.
In that raid, the bureau
confiscated a total of 13 plastic packets containing `syabu'
hidden in a cigarette box.
The trafficker has long been
active and was cunningly elusive until the NCB's continuous
efforts topped up with public assistance in proving information,
finally apprehended him and held in remand for investigation.
A house in Kg Batong Panchur
Murai was the second target on October 14, 2006, where a local
married couple was apprehended for trafficking in syabu.
The working couple, aged between
31 and 28 years old are still under remand. The husband works as a
school bus driver and his wife is a freelance make-up artist.

In this raid, NCB confiscated 41
packets and 14 straw cuts believed to contain syabu and a digital
weighing machine, a box of plastic straws used to pack drugs as
well as equipment to consume drugs.
In a third case, a local
25-year-old man was caught in a car parked at Jerudong Park area
last Tuesday (Oct 17) for drug abuse and has been remanded.
Following this arrest, the
raiding party rounded up 3 men and 5 women at a guest house in
Jerudong in possession of 102.966 grams of syabu. Three of the
five women are of Thai origin while the remaining two are locals
aged 21 and 18 years. |
NCB in a press release highlighted
that the offence of trafficking in syabu under Section 3(a) Misuse of
Drug Act, Chapter 27 whereby 20 to 50 gms is liable to a minimum
imprisonment term of 20 years and 15 strokes of the cane and maximum
imprisonment of 30 years and 15 strokes.
For the offence in possession of
equipment or apparatus used for consuming drugs under Section 7 of the
Misuse of Drug Act, Chapter 27, the offender is liable to a maximum
imprisonment of 3 years or $10,000 fine or both.
The offence for allowing a place to
be used for drug activities, under Section 9 of the Misuse of Drugs
Act, Chapter 27, the offender is liable to a minimum jail term of 2
years or $4,000 fine or both while maximum penalty is 10 years jail
term or fined $40,000 or both.
In this regard, the bureau for the
umpteenth time reminds all at large that drug abuse will lead to a
heavy penalty and monitoring will ensure an environment free of drugs.
The bureau welcomes public
cooperation in disseminating information related to drug abuse by
calling 2448877 and (after office hours) 8777444. --
