Hari Raya To Be Decided On Sunday

Begawan - The Ministry of Religious Affairs has set, this
Sunday October 22 to sight the new moon of Syawal which will determine
the date of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
A statement from the ministry
yesterday stated that the sightings will take place at the four
locations throughout the country
In the Brunei-Muara district, the
Bukit Shahbandar in Jerudong will be the focal point, while two areas
in the Tutong district are at Buldt Ambok and Bukit Agok.
Another sighting will take place at
Bukit Lumut, opposite the Brunei LNG site in the Belait district.
A survey technician at the Survey
Department's Astronomy Unit, Daud Jihan, said that about 50 people
from various departments concerned would be dispatched to all four
sighting stations.
He said the officials will be at the
various designated locations from as early as 2pm on that day.
Twenty powerful Meade telescopes will
be used on Sunday to ensure a thorough and accurate sighting of the
new moon, he said.
If the new moon is successfully
sighted, then the first day of the month of Syawal, will fall on the
next day, October 23, 2006.
Otherwise, the festive season will
begin on Tuesday, October 24. The results of the sighting will be
announced by Radio Television Brunei nationwide.
On the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri,
RTB will also telecast live the Hari Raya Titah by His Majesty Sultan
Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Brunei's neighbouring country Malaysia also set Sunday
for the sighting of the new moon of Syawal.
According to its Keeper of the Rulers
Seal, a total of- 28 locations throughout the country have been
selected to sight the new moon.
