Sg Tujoh Quiet On Weekdays, Busy
On Weekends
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Nowadays, the Sungai Tujoh Control Post is quiet
during the early hours on weekdays.
Is the current Brunei Grand Sale
taking effect or are more Bruneians avoiding the city because of the
rising number of break-ins on Brunei registered vehicles.
However, it's an entirely different
story for the weekends.
A customs official who was speaking
to the Bulletin said that it would normally be very busy in the
weekend after 4pm.
There has been an increase of 300 to
400 vehicles that have passed through the control posts this Ramadhan,
the official added.
The favourable exchange rate for the
Brunei dollar in Malaysia (i.e. IBND:RM2.3) could be the main reason
why people are still crossing the border.
Observers noted that with this high
exchange rate, it would be much cheaper for Bruneians to purchase
their groceries, clothing, electronics and other goods for Hari
Raya
in the East Malaysian state.
During the festive season, most
locals would often make new curtains in Miri, as the cost for
materials and labour charge were twice cheaper there.
Shopping centres, department stores
and supermarkets in Miri are offering lots of discounts, tempting
Bruneians to do their last-minute shopping there.
Driving to Miri is much easier these
days since vehicles do not have to board ferries to get to the city.
Bruneians now only have to pay a RM20 toll fee to drive over the new
bridge.
The customs and immigration personnel
in Brunei are bracing for a very busy weekend, as Hari Raya is just
around the corner. On average, the control posts, which operate from
6am to 10pm, handle about 1,000 vehicles per day.
As the Hari Raya Aidil Fitri
celebration draws closer, Muslims are urged not to spend unnecessarily
just for the celebration, but to seek for forgiveness and to rekindle
ties among family members, relatives and friends during the special
celebration. -- Courtesy of Borneo
