By Malai FadleyRizal and Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 37-year-old Indian man was jailed for four months and caned three times after pleading guilty to overstaying in the country.

The Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday heard a team of Immigration Enforcement personnel raided a worker's quarters at Kg Bukit Bendera, Tutong on October 12.

The defendant failed to produce valid documents to prove his legal status in the country.

Upon investigation, he was found to have a previous conviction under the Immigration Act and was supposed to leave the country long ago.

The defendant was found to have overstayed after the expiry of a special pass issued to him on January 31, 2004.

Meanwhile, another Indian, Abas Rawuthar, 46, was jailed for four months and given three strokes of caning.

The defendant had a previous conviction in 2003 and was issued a special pass to compel his appearance before the enforcement section.

The special pass, extended from time to time, was last extended to October 13, 2003 and valid for three days.

He ran away until he was detained on October 21 by an Immigration officer who bumped into him and recognised him at the High Court building's parking lot. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
