Nearly $10mil Tithe Given To Poor, Needy

Bandar Seri Begawan - Close to $10 million cash from the tithe collection will be distributed this year, the Islamic Religious Council said yesterday. Some $9,830,440 from tithe collection will be distributed to 16,534 poor and needy recipients from 3,856 families throughout the country. Every family head would receive $1,300 while their dependents will receive $380 each.

For recipients who have a bank account, the tithe will be distributed through their accounts while others would receive it from the Islamic Religious Council. The decision was made during by Tithe Issuance Committee in their meeting last week.

There are 9,968 recipients in the Brunei/Muara district, 3,477 in Belait, 2,315 in Tutong and 774 in Temburong. The committee has decided that issuance to the underprivileged will be made every month for a year, similar to that of the previous year's. This financial assistance is aimed to aid in saving.

Receiving this issuance are 3,856 heads of family and 12,678 members of family.

Some 3,106 Muallaf (new Muslim converts) will be receiving tithe. $300 each will be given for 2,325 heads of family, and $220 each for 781 family members. It will be distributed by appointed tithe collectors. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
