Sweet-Talked Into Losing Handphone

Bandar Seri Begawan - Amidst a spate of rising crime, the Internet chat lines have become the latest modus operandi used for mobile phone thefts with six cases recorded since early this year, police revealed yesterday.

The Brunei Police District advised the public not to be lured by anyone wanting to borrow mobile phones after meeting through a popular online chat which has become a hit among youths here. The advice comes as a woman managed to steal six mobile phones from six men she met through an online_ chat.

"She met the victims (men), got acquainted and borrowed the phone from them before she disappeared. The victims reported the matter to the police upon which we carried-out further investigation. Such activity has been especially rampant since June," OCPD of Brunei Police District, Acting Sr Supt Pg. Hj Rakit B. Pg. Hj Osman, said.

Also present were ASP Pg. Abd Salam Pg. Hj Abd Ghani and Acting ASP Hj Mohd Khairul Amilin Hj Idris, District Crime Investigation Officers of Brunei Police District.

Earlier, Brunei Police OCPD showed ample electrical equipment, mostly sound systems, which have been traced back to thefts in the past months. They include eight amplifiers, a sound mixer, four hi-fu's, three playstations, five video camcorders, jewellery, four laptops and dozens of games DVDs with the total value seized yet to be determined.

In connection with this, police said they succeeded in apprehending several men and women in connection with house break-ins and thefts as well as car break-ins and thefts.

Four locals were involved in house break-ins and thefts while another three locals were involved in car break-ins and thefts. One man and woman were detained for stealing mobile phones where many cases have been reported lately.

Several suspects are still being hunted to assist in police investigation. They are aged between 19-42, unemployed, and have past criminal track records, faced sentence and imprisonment previously.

With the arrests, police managed to solve several cases reported at Brunei Police District, Tutong, Berakas and Muara. Police also retrieved some stolen items while the rest are still being investigated. In view of this, police call on those who reported stolen items to identify them.

Meanwhile, police reiterated on the need for the public to switch-on their residential lights including garage, not to leave houses unattended, to inform someone when away and to always lock their houses.

Installing an alarm system is advantageous while cash and valuables should be kept in safer places like a safety deposit or entrusted to someone close and to park cars' in a visible area.

The public should be alert for noises especially after midnight and to note suspicious cars parked or cruising about by noting the licence plate.

The public is also advised to record any suspicious people coming to the house, to lock cars even if it is only a quick exit, not to leave valuables inside and displayed openly. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
