Ambush On The Young & Restless
By James Kon & Za'im Zaini

Bandar Seri Begawan - A massive police operation trapping people and cars loitering until late night at the Hassanal Bolkiah National `Stadium, ended with some 17 cars hauled back to the Berakas Police District Station.

The Investigation/Traffic Department made this surprise sweep with enforcement agencies in the vicinity of the National Stadium in Berakas on Saturday at midnight.

Famous as one of the headier lofts for restless youth in the middle of the night, all exits from the stadium were cordoned off to prevent cars from escaping until 3am.

The joint operation codenamed "Operasi Lepak" ('Operation Loitering') was organised by Berakas Police District and involved 150 enforcement personnel from the Berakas Police District, Investigation/Traffic Department, Police Reserve Unit 'D' Company, Narcotics Control Bureau, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Land Transport Department and Royal Customs and Excise Department. Among the offences found were illegal modifications on vehicles, driving without road tax and licence.

During searches conducted on some vehicles, items like cans of beer and a VCD with suspected sexual content were also found.

At one point during the operation, a driver tried to elude the authorities but traffic police on motorcycles gave chase and detained the runaway.

The objective of the operation was to deter and to eradicate criminal activities, social ills, activities of `illegal racing' and vehicle modifications without approval. In line with this operation, the Royal Brunei Police Force would like to remind those involved in such activities that the police would not hesitate to take action on them.   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
