August Sees Rise In Consumer Prices
By P. Marilyn

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August 2006 has increased by 0.2 per cent from the previous month with an index of 102.4.

The rise was partly attributed to some prices reverting to their original levels after the end of the "Pesta Jualan" or sales festival.

The cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 0.1 per cent due to higher prices of fresh prawn and other seafood, eggs, cheese, vegetables and fruit.

Higher prices-of ready-made clothing and accessories, materials for male and female and footwear led to an increase of 3.5 per cent in the cost of clothing and footwear.

The cost of household goods, services and operation went up by 1.2 per cent due to higher prices of furniture, household furnishings, kitchen appliances and utensils, crockery and cutlery as well as household operations.

Lower prices of certain airfares meanwhile caused a 0.2 decrease in the cost of transport. Communication costs went down by 0.1 per cent due to lower prices of instruments including accessories. Medical and health costs increased by 0.4 per cent due to higher prices of proprietary medicines and supplies.

The cost of recreation and entertainment fell by 1.7 per cent as a result of lower prices of holiday packages. Higher prices of personal care and personal effects and other personal goods led to the increase in cost of miscellaneous goods and services by 0.6 per cent.

The costs of housing, water, electricity and maintenance and education meanwhile remained unchanged. The CPI in August 2006 was 0.3 per cent higher than that of the same month in 2005. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
