Bandar Seri Begawan - Eight-year old Ievon Liaw Yee Wen yesterday received a donation of BND$10,000 from QAF Brunei to meet the cost of medical treatment in Singapore.

Grateful parents Liaw Teck Kiong and his wife were present to receive the donation from QAF Children's Medical Fund.

Ievon has been diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma, a tumor in the brain. She had already undergone surgery at RIPAS Hospital and now requires further treatment at the National University Hospital, Singapore. According to RIPAS Hospital, the estimated cost of treatment will be approximately $10,000.

The youngest of three in the family, levon had been studying at Chung Hwa School.

According to her father, Mr. Liaw Teck Kiong, who has been working with the Royal Brunei Police Force for 19 years, Ievon had first shown symptoms of her illness when she experienced problems with her vision.

After being checked up at the eye clinic and after much examination, the tumor had been detected after a CT scan.

"I was very upset when I heard the news and I didn't know what to do. I am concerned about her safety and I have been seeking doctor's opinion on what needs to be done to ensure my daughter's safety," said Mr. Liaw,

"The donation would help lessen my expenses as Singapore is a very expensive country," he added.

Relatives and friends have also contributed to help the Liaw's family with their expenses. Ievon and her parents will be leaving for Singapore today (Sunday).  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
