By Achong Tanjong

Bandar Seri Begawan - Some 120 children from Pusat Bahagia and Welfare House in Kg Pulaie, under the Community Development Department, were treated to sungkai (breaking of fast) at the Malaysian High Commission yesterday evening.

The event, which was held in conjunction with the month of Ramadhan, was jointly organised by the Malaysian High Commission and Persatuan Warganegara Malaysia (PWM)

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of donations amounting to $3,000 to the welfare centre. Among the donors were Andy Lau, managing director ofAifa Sdn Bhd, who donated $1,000, and PWM President Simon D. Gelan who handed over $1,000 on behalf of the association.

Meanwhile, Thomas Koh, general manager of Air Cat Forwarding, and an anonymous donor each donated $500. The donations were first presented to Malaysian High Commissioner Datuk Ali bin Abdullah and his wife, Datin Wan Kamariah Wan Abd Rahman. It was then handed over to Datin Hjh Adina Othman, director of Community Development Department.

The Malaysian high commissioner also handed over "Duit Raya" to the children at the event. The money was contributed by PWN and the Malaysian community in the Sultanate.

Datuk Ali hoped that the contribution would bring cheer to the children, especially during the Hari Raya festivities. He added that yesterday's event was to show the children that there are people out there who care for them.

The Malaysian high commissioner also encouraged the children to study hard so that they can be successful in the future.

Before the breaking of fast, Maghrib prayers were performed. Also present at the event were Awg Mohd Rosmadee, assistant director of Community Development Department, officers from the department and executive committee members of PWM.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
