Brunei Committed To Better Education
By Sobrina Rosli

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Brunei Government is committed to establishing an education system which equips students with skills to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Education Director-General Norjum Yusop said this was the government's pledge in achieving quality education to boost the country's social and economic development.

To achieve this goal, the government was hoping more school leavers would undertake high quality tertiary education and training, she said in her welcoming speech at the Australian Education Fair yesterday.

"It is my firm belief that leading Australian institutions of learning can play an important role in preparing our youth not only for their own future but towards fulfilling the country's aspirations," she said.

Overseas students in Australian universities and higher learning institutions numbered 350,000 in 2005, with a majority enrolled in undergraduate courses.

Of the total, 705 were Bruneian students comprising 570 enrolled at 38 universities, 93 at vocational and technical education institutes and 16 at Australian schools.

Present at the education fair at a hotel in the capital were Australian High Commissioner in Brunei Dr Ruth Adler and representatives from nine universities and colleges.

The representatives gave talks on study opportunities in Australia and revealed that online study programs were also becoming popular.

The University of Newcastle, one of Australia's leading research institutions, is offering online postgraduate programs through GraduateSchool.com.

The university's online learning program ensures a flexible mode of delivery, at the same time ensuring that students receive a high quality education at a time and place that suits them. Online learning has been proven to be most effective and flexible way for busy professionals to fit' work, study and personal commitments into a demanding schedule.
