By Yusrin Junaidi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Noor Aflan bin AwangKachi, an officer from the
National Disaster Management Centre, Ministry of Home Affairs,
yesterday left for Bangkok to attend the Asean Day for Disaster
Management (ADDM) 2006 today.
The event is conducted by the United
Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction in conjunction
with the International Day for Disaster Reduction.
The objectives of the Asean Day for
Disaster Management 2006 are to create awareness on disaster risks and
disaster management in the Asean region and to maintain critical
momentum toward the implementation of the Asean Agreement on Disaster
Management and Emergency Response.
It also aims to harmonise actions and
frameworks on disaster risk reduction at the regional level and to
publicise and promote Asean's agenda on disaster risk reduction at the
global level.
The theme for the Asean Day for
Disaster Management 2006 is "Strengthening Community Capacity and
Disaster Resilience in the Asean Region".
The Asean Ministerial Meeting on
Disaster Management held in December 2004 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia had
agreed on the celebration of ADDM as part of the International Day for
Disaster Reduction on every second Wednesday of October.
It is expected that by celebrating
ADDM as part of theinternational day celebration would bring
international attention to disaster management and assist in lifting
the profile of disaster management in the Asean region. -- Courtesy of Borneo
