Senior Citizens Welcome Hike In
Pension Rate

Begawan - Senior citizens of the country are full of praise and
appreciation after their beloved ruler announced Monday night of an
increase in the rate of Old Pension Scheme and other allowances paid
under the Old Age and Disability Act.

Dato Seri Paduka Haji Marsal, an elderly businessman said on behalf of
senior citizens in Mukim Sengkurong that he wished to thank His
Majesty for the increase in the pension rate.
"The pension pay increase will
benefit all the senior people in this country especially those who
depend solely on pension for their day-today survival," he said.
"We have seen an increase in the
prices of goods including meat and other imported food' items. So it
is timely for an increase in the pension pay," he added.
He said the hike also showed that His
Majesty really takes care of the welfare of his subjects especially
the elderly.
Before the increase, senior citizens
who are citizens or permanent residents of this country received a pay
check of $200 a month once they reached the age of 60.
The announcement of the pension rate
hike was made by His Majesty in his titah during a ceremony to
commemorate the revelation of Al-Quran or Nuzul Al-Quran at the
International Convention Centre in Berakas.
The increase has taken effect from
October 1, 2006 and further details will be announced in a circular by
the Prime Minister's Office which will be issued shortly. -- Courtesy of Borneo
