Bandar Seri Begawan - Senior citizens of the country are full of praise and appreciation after their beloved ruler announced Monday night of an increase in the rate of Old Pension Scheme and other allowances paid under the Old Age and Disability Act.

Zainuddin Dato Seri Paduka Haji Marsal, an elderly businessman said on behalf of senior citizens in Mukim Sengkurong that he wished to thank His Majesty for the increase in the pension rate.

"The pension pay increase will benefit all the senior people in this country especially those who depend solely on pension for their day-today survival," he said.

"We have seen an increase in the prices of goods including meat and other imported food' items. So it is timely for an increase in the pension pay," he added.

He said the hike also showed that His Majesty really takes care of the welfare of his subjects especially the elderly.

Before the increase, senior citizens who are citizens or permanent residents of this country received a pay check of $200 a month once they reached the age of 60.

The announcement of the pension rate hike was made by His Majesty in his titah during a ceremony to commemorate the revelation of Al-Quran or Nuzul Al-Quran at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

The increase has taken effect from October 1, 2006 and further details will be announced in a circular by the Prime Minister's Office which will be issued shortly.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
