Kuala Belait -
One hundred boxes of prohibited fireworks and firecrackers were
seized by Kuala Belait police personnel during a surprise inspection
on shops and supermarkets in Belait town, late Monday afternoon.
The surprise inspection was carried
out to stop the sale of firecrackers and fireworks not allowed by the
police, in conjunction with the Hari Raya celebration.
Eight retail stores and supermarkets
in Belait town came under scrutiny of Kuala Belait police personnel
led by the Station Commanding Officer.
The vendors were checked for proper
documentation for the sale of fireworks and to make sure no
firecrackers were sold.
Police personnel issued a stem
warning to all vendors not to continue selling prohibited firecrackers
and fireworks in the interest of public safety.
In conjunction with the Hari
RayaAidilfitri celebration, the Municipal Department issued a
temporary licence fee of $50 for permission to sell fireworks, which
are legal only during the Ramadhan month.
The approved fireworks include rocket
parachute, butterfly, happy boom, electric sparklers, thunder rocket
and Saturn missiles battery. However, approval from the police is
still required before vendors can sell these fireworks.
Police also issued nine categories of
fireworks and firecrackers not permitted for sale such as ceremony
shell, small festival ball, display shell, handle elesgroket, thunder
clap, ground cakes, 40,0008 small festival balls, w6678 circoblit
handle and elesg rocket.
A ban was imposed on such items to
safeguard the public as these firecrackers produce an explosive sound
and their debris can hurt people and cause damage to properties.
The sale of unauthorised fireworks
and firecrackers is an offence under the Arms and Explosives Act
Chapter 58, and those found guilty will face a fine of $1,000.
