Appreciating Our Elders
By Husin Ismail Khairunnisa Ibrahim

Bandar Seri Begawan - In expressing-the nation's gratitude to the contribution of senior citizens, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzadin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, last night announced the increment of their pension and allowances effective October 1.

This is in recognition of their role in the development of the country and as a token of appreciation for their efforts, His Majesty said in his Titah to mark the National Nuzul Al-Quran celebration at the International Convention Centre.

"To acknowledge their contributions and also as a symbol of remembrance, a pension scheme was introduced in the past named 'pension for the elders'. Our country has never felt that it was at a loss or felt deficient by establishing this pension scheme.

"On the contrary, it has become a source of blessing that strengthens and harmonises the country."

The decision for the increment is based on the principles of welfare as prescribed in Islam, to which the government of Brunei strongly adheres.

His Majesty said the country was blessed with peace, security and prosperity which emanated from the good intentions and charitable acts from all of levels of society, especially among the elders who had laid that foundation of welfare.

Earlier, His Majesty called on the people of Brunei to emphasise and prioritise education and knowledge. Recognising the importance of knowledge, the government of Brunei has provided facilities and encouragement. His Majesty said one must strive to reach for success through diligent practice and hard work.
