Break Raya For Six
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Hari Raya this year will be a bleak one for six
employees of a local company who claim to have been unpaid since
joining the establishment about two months ago.
The same woe goes for other employees
who have been paid only half their salaries over the last two months.
They and their families may now be
facing a miserable and depressing Hari Raya. Until now, they have not
bought or ordered new clothes for their wives and children too.
One of them said he first joined the
company about two months ago for a salary of $450 a month but he has
not received any payment yet.
"I could understand that I did not
receive anything at the end of August since I was employed for only
two weeks," he said. "But to not receive anything until now has caused
a lot of distress as I have to feed my family and buy milk for my
children."
"Furthermore, with the Hari RayaAidil
Fitri celebrations drawing closer, we need our salaries so we can
celebrate the festivity like other families," he said.
He added he shed a few tears when his
two children asked him a few days ago when they would go shopping to
buy new clothes for Hari Raya.
"We hope our employer will understand
our predicament and pay our salary within the next few days," the
employees said.
"Otherwise we'll have no choice but
to close our doors during Hari Raya as we may not be able to celebrate
as others will," they said.
They said they were also asked to
work overtime for many hours a day without any mention that they would
get paid for the extra work.
"Every time we asked about our
salaries our manager challenged us to quit the company. How can we
resign when getting a job nowadays has never been an easy task," they
asked. -- Courtesy of Borneo
