Public Calls For Safer Driving
By Rosli Abidin Yahya,
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The roadworthiness of motor vehicles during the
current festive season came under close scrutiny by the Royal Brunei
Police Force as they set up roadblocks to catch errant motorists
yesterday.
The roadblocks were carried out as
part of efforts to reduce the number of car accidents that usually
peak during the Hari Raya Aidil Fitri festivities.
Year after year, accidents would peak
around the Aidil Fitri period as more people travelled across the
country to visit their families and friends to exchange greetings as
well as to attend the countless open house events.
Some members of the public suggested
that a longer minimum period of driving lessons should be imposed for
learner drivers to ensure they have adequate training and knowledge so
they can become fully equipped on the road.
"The attitudes of some drivers need
to be changed. All things in life start with manners. Bad manners on
the road can be the death of someone."
Others felt schools had a role in
advancing road safety where they can play a larger role in road safety
education as a long-term measure.
"Education on road safety should
begin at primary school level and continue even beyond driving school.
What is also needed is public education, as the issue also involves
pedestrians," they added. -- Courtesy of Borneo
