Lights On For A Safer Raya
By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - Beware the `fast' catch' thieves swooping down on houses when the faithful is out breaking fast or soon celebrating Hari Raya, police said yesterday.

The reminder was made by Acting DSO of Jerudong police district for the festive season which is going to be celebrated in about two weeks' time.

He also said that during the current fasting month of Ramadhan, house break-ins and theft are common crimes reported to the Jerudong police district.

"This is especially so when the house owner goes out for the breaking of fast (or sungkai) and (even) stays out until the last meal before fasting (or sahur) at the crack of dawn.

They should also lock their house properly," he said.

Whilst reminding the public to keep their' valuables in secured places or to bring along and not to leave them at home, he also called on the public to light- up their areas as darkness invites crime.

"They intruded and stole items at 12 houses and one retail shop between March and September 2006 at Pengkalan Batu. They also committed theft at a flat in the capital late last year."

Items seized include jewellery weighing 38 grams, Rolex wrist watch, lap top, 21- inch TV set, one speaker system, an equalizer, a play station, two mobile phones and charger, one disco lamp, 84 compact discs, a hand bag and a school bag. The four will be brought to court once investigation ends.   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
