Limbang's Ramadhan Stalls
By Dwi Abdullah
Bandar Seri
Begawan - For Muslims, Ramadhan is a significant period for
spiritual reflection, prayers, doing good deeds and spending more time
with family and friends.
It is also a time for bazaars and
stalls that offer all kinds of traditional Malay fare, some of which
are only available during the fasting month.
In Limbang, makeshift stalls mushroom
at nooks and corners offering food and beverages for the "berbuka
puasa" needs of Muslims. Bruneians who go for shopping trips in
Limbang are seen frequenting the stalls and looking for food and
beverages.
The stalls, set up as early as 4pm,
are packed with people of all races, and attract Muslims and non
Muslims to their special delicacies.
Working city dwellers who do not have
time to cook, rush to the bazaars to buy pre-cooked dishes to enjoy
with their families at home.
Customers throng the bazaars as early
as 5pm to buy local kuih, cakes and drinks or traditional dishes like
rendang tok and gulai lemak cili padi ikan.
Aroma from stalls selling freshly
grilled ayam percik, ayam golek and ikan bakar draw buyers and are
usually a hit during the buka puasa.
For traders, it is a chance to earn
some extra income in time for Hari Raya celebrations. -- Courtesy of Borneo
