Belait Tailor Shops, 'Dhobis' Come
Under Immigration Checks

Begawan - An Indian national was arrested by Belait -
immigration Enforcement officers during an inspection on Thursday
morning, after he was found to have been working in the country with
an expired employment pass.
The 50-year-old man was apprehended
during an inspection on a business premise in Kampong Lumut for
failing to produce any self-identification documents, and was brought
to the office for further investigation on was work pass status.
The Immigration officers discovered
that the suspect's work pass had expired two days ago, breaching
Chapter 15(1) of the Immigration Act and will be brought to court to
face charges.
A team of five Belait Immigration
Enforcement officers led by a Senior Immigration Officer conducted an
operation codenamed "Ops Berkas 103/ 2006". The operation targeted
twelve business operations focusing on tailoring and 'dhobi' or
laundry shops at several locations in Kampong Sungai Liang, Lumutand
Seria.
During an inspection on a business
premise in Kampong Lumut, three foreign workers -two Indonesians and
an Indianwere issued with special passes requiring them to report to
the Belait Immigration Enforcement Section for further clarification
of their passports.
A gardener was also scrutinised and
issued with a special pass, during the operation. According to a
tip-off from the public, the gardener was allegedly
multi-tasking-overseeing the gardening whilst also selling gardening
products.
Meanwhile, in a separate inspection
on a tailoring store in Seria, enforcement officers-issued special
passes to four foreign workers for further inspection and
clarification of their documents.
The continuous series of operations
is being carried out to detect Immigration offenders and to ensure all
foreign workers abide by the law and conditions stipulated in their
respective Immigration work passes.
Inspections were carried out on some
30 foreign workers from India, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia
during yesterday's four-hour operation that began at 8.40am.
The Immigration Department once again
reminded employers to provide their workers with photocopies of
important documents such as passports and identity cards in case of
inspections.
The Enforcement Section will continue
to patrol and conduct continuous operations to locate and arrest
suspected Immigration offenders.
