Terawih Prayers From Mecca On RTB
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei viewers will be able to watch a live telecast
of Terawih prayers from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca commencing Oct 7 at
the national television channel, the Radio Television Brunei (RTB).
The live telecast shall commence
about 1 am. Live telecast of Terawih prayers are also available
through Radio Television Malaysia (RTMI) at the same time.
During the month of Ramadhan, special
evening prayers known as Terawih are conducted during which long
portions of the Al- Qur'an are recited.
The word Terawih comes from the
Arabic word which means to rest and relax. The prayer can be very long
(well over an hour), during which one stands upright to read from the
Al- Qur’an and performs many cycles of movement (standing, bowing,
prostrating, sitting).
After each four cycles, one sits for
a brief period of rest before continuing. This is where the name
Terawih ("rest prayer") comes from.
During the standing portions of the
prayer, long sections - of the Al-Qur'an are read. The Al-Qur'an is
divided into equal parts (called juz) for the purpose of reading
sections of equal length during each of the Ramadhan nights.
Thus, one juz of the Al-Qur'an is
read on successive evenings, so that by the end of the month the
entire 30 juz of Al-Qur'an has been completed.
It is recommended that Muslims attend
the Terawih prayers in the mosque after Isyak, the last evening
prayer, in congregation.
However, one may also perform the
prayers individually at home. These prayers are voluntary, but are
strongly recommended and widely practiced.
Saudi Arabia television also
broadcasts the Terawih prayers live from Mecca with subtitling- of
English translation on portions of Al-Quran read during the prayers.
The unique English translation has
been noted for its clarity and adherence to the correct universally
recognised interpretations of Islamic teachings.
The translation programme itself was
developed by experts in both translation and Quranic recitation with
great precision, automating the Arabic to English translation process
without loss of accuracy while utilising computers and CG equipment.
The TV feed of the new translation,
wholly owned by the Saudi Ministry for Islamic Affairs, Endowment,
Dawa and Guidance, is being broadcast via Saudi TV Channel 1 to
various international satellite channels covering Ramadhan prayers
from Mecca for millions of viewers around the world.
Viewers around the globe have
recorded their satisfaction with the launch of the new translation
that will help them follow Ramadhan prayers in Mecca's Sacred Mosque
closer than ever before. The step is also seen as an opportunity to
open a window to a deeper understanding of Islam for an international
TV audience. -- Courtesy of Borneo
