HSBC Presents $13,000 To Special
Olympics Athletes
By Suria Rina PHA
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Three Special Olympics officials and four special
athletes from Brunei will depart for the Head of Delegation Seminar
and Invitational Games to be held from October 13 to 20.
Supporting the programme, HSBC
yesterday morning presented its sponsorship of BND$13,000 to Brunei
Darussalam Special Olympics. It was held at Pusat Ehsan in Kg
Bengkurong.
On hand to present on behalf of HSBC
were Deputy Chief Executive Officer Rosdi Amin Yaakub and Sponsor of
HSBC's Corporate Social Responsibility Programme Matthew Martin, as
well as other senior managers of the bank.
The Special Olympics games provide
opportunities to empower special individuals and a chance for them to
keep themselves physically fit, productive and respected among members
of society through sports training and competition.
"This is only the first contribution
in HSBC's ongoing sponsorship of Brunei's Special Olympics programme,
which will culminate in November 2007, when the full Special Olympics
team will compete in the World Special Olympics Games in Shanghai next
year," said Rosdi Amin.
He also added that they are hopeful
that the athletes' efforts and diligence will bring positive results
into the Shanghai games. "When I stand here and say I'm representing
HSBC, I am representing the many wonderful and caring staff of HSBC,
most of whom are involved in HSBC Cares projects aimed at helping the
community.
"Although these voluntary activities
take place mainly outside normal working hours, many staff members
would still volunteer because HSBC Cares is part of the bank's
culture.
"Our staff members get a very big
sense of ownership, belonging and accomplishment when given the
opportunity to initiate and implement the project," he said
Sports attire and air tickets to the
Special Olympics officials and athletes were also presented yesterday.
According to HSBC, the sponsorship
was funded by proceeds from "Walk Through the Ages", a 60-mile
walkathon organised by the bank earlier in May.
More than 300 HSBC staff members
participated in the two-day walkathon from HSBC Seria Branch to
Serusop Branch, while a further 80 provided around-the-clock support.
The HSBC Deputy Chief Executive
Officer also hoped that they would be able to contribute much more of
their time and skills in helping the community for many years to come. -- Courtesy of Borneo
