Bandar Seri Begawan - Some 60- students were awarded yesterday for their outstanding performances in this year's International Australian Chemistry Quiz Competition.

Plaques awarded by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute to the top _one per cent of the worldwide participants were given to the top 24 chemistry students in Brunei Darussalam.

Dr Ruth Adler, Australian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, presented the High Distinction, Distinction or Credit Certificates to the outstanding students. Their achievements of merit represented a 20 per cent increase from the previous year.

This is the seventh year the quiz has been organised in Brunei, said Dr Adler. Brunei first participated in the chemistry quiz in 1999. She also spoke of the educational links between Australia and Brunei and underlined the growing number of Bruneians who further their education in Australia.

The best Form 4 student came from St. Andrew's School. The best Form 5 students came from Chung Ching Middle School, Chung Hwa Middle School BSB and St Andrew's School. The best Form 6 student came from SM SayyidinaAli, Kuala Belait.

The presentation ceremony was hosted by Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan, whose Chemistry Department organised the competition, coordinated by chemistry teachers of 36 participating schools.

The Principal of MSPSBS, Pg Hjh Sarah bte Pg Hj Kamaluddin, delivered a welcoming speech. The Brunei National Coordinator, Mr. Mike Saxon, also spoke.

This year, 1344 students from 36 Brunei secondary schools and 113,323 students from 14 countries joined the competition. To avoid any interstate difference or country difference in syllabus content, all participating students competed on a "country only" basis.

The host's chemistry department gave complimentary chemistry book awards to all schools participating in the competition, to promote an interest in and enjoyment of chemistry amongst Bruneian students.

The quiz aimed to promote and encourage an awareness of the nature and relevance of chemistry amongst secondary school students and make them join a challenging and rewarding activity.

It hoped to build the interest of the quiz participants in the various developments of chemistry and enhance the importance of its role in today's society.

Questions for the International Australian Chemistry Quiz Competition are based on the fundamental aspects of chemistry and its application in modern society.
