30 Per Cent Decrease In HFMD Cases
In September
By P Marilyn
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Ministry of Health reported a 30 per cent
decrease in the number of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease cases for the
month of September, compared to August where 302 cases of HFMD were
reported.
A press release by the Ministry of
Health stated that from 1st to 30th September, 211 cases of HFMD were
reported. Majority of the cases (87 per cent), were not severe. They
were treated in the outpatient- section and patients have fully
recovered.
Only 13 per cent of the total cases
reported in the month of September required ward treatment.
However, even with the decline in the
number of HFMD cases, the Ministry of Health advised the public to be
cautious and cooperate with the ministry and other government agencies
in taking measures to overcome the disease.
The Ministry of Health reminded the
public to constantly maintain cleanliness and personal hygiene, such
as washing hands with soap after visiting restrooms and before
preparing food.
Children infected with HFMD are not
to be brought to crowded places such as supermarkets, shopping
complexes and swimming pools. Children suffering from HFMD symptoms
should immediately be brought to hospital or to the nearest health
centre. They should not be allowed to go to school as they might
infect other children.
The ministry also reminded parents
that children infected with HFMD should be forbidden to play with
other siblings until they have recovered.
Parents and guardians were also
advised to practise good personal hygiene while looking after young
children. For further information on HFMD contact the Healthline at
