Brunei may take part in 28 sports

Begawan - The Department of Youth and Sports along with the
Brunei National Olympic Council (BNOC) yesterday conducted a meeting
with the country's sports associations regarding the 24th SEA Games
that will take place in Thailand from Dec 6-15 next year.
Present to head the meeting that took
placed at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex was Awang Japar
bin Bangkol, the Honorable Secretary of BNOC and attended by
representatives from the several sports associations.
The 24th SEA Games sports are divided
into three categories where a total of 40 sporting events will be
contested and a total of 441 medals to be won.
It has been proposed by the Brunei
National Olympic Council and the Department of Youth and Sports that
Brunei are to take part in 28 sports and will await the feedback from
the respective local sports associations regarding their
participation.
The sports associations are required
to submit the names of their selected athletes along with coach and
manager before Jan 1 next year.
The 28 proposed sports are athletics,
aquatics which are in category 1, badminton, basketball, billiards and
snooker, bowling, boxing, canoeing, rowing, cycling, equestrian,
fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, karate, rugby, sepak
takraw, softball, table tennis, taekwando, tennis, volleyball and
wushu in category 2 while in category 3 are lawn bowl, pencak silat
and traditional boat race.
Among other issues raised by some of
the sports associations and discussed in yesterday's meeting was on
the selection of calibre coaches, the open selection of athletes for
the SEA Games, the allocation of funds and also the issue on
centralised training.
