Jerudong family in dire straits

While almost all Bruneians cannot wait for Hari Raya Aidlfitri to come, there are some in this country who don't even have loose change to prepare for the festivity.

The Bulletin yesterday came across one such family at Simpang Jalan Kubu off Jalan Jerudong, with earnings well below the national average.

Living in a dilapidated home and supporting elderly parents and two handicapped brothers to boot, a local woman by the name of Hjh Noriah is unsure of how her family's Hari Raya will be this year. Her father, in his 70s, is in a bad state of health, while her mother is blind. Her two brothers living with them - in their 50s and 40s - are handicapped.

The situation is very difficult for Hjh Noriah - the sole breadwinner in the family - as she has to divide her time trying to earn some money and taking care of her family. Money she does earn is barely enough for daily necessities, let alone to prepare for the upcoming Hari Raya.

The Bulletin was asked not to take photos of the family, but was granted permission to take pictures of their home.
