Keele University, A Favourite Destination For Brunei Students
By Azrol Azmi

Bandar Seri Begawan - Nestled amidst a pristine 650-acre campus, Keele University is surrounded by landscaped parklands, precious woodlands and lakes, and is widely regarded as one of England's most beautiful university campuses.

The town of Keele, meanwhile, is located between Birmingham and Manchester, approximately two hours from central London.

Founded in the late 1940's, Keele University has grown from 200 students to a total student population of 10,000. It is renowned for its innovative approach to education, offering degrees that give students breadth in their studies, which in turn gives graduates the competitive edge.

The university provides high quality teaching across a wide range of subjects, with the added benefit of studying for a "Dual Honours" degree, where students can gain an "Honours" level in two subjects over three years.

Students have a choice of over 700 degree courses in "Dual Honours" degrees as well as "Interdisciplinary Single Honours" courses. By undertaking the "Dual Honours" degree, students can combine two principal subjects from different disciplines in equal numbers for the three years. "Keele's Dual Honours advantages have indeed struck a chord with Brunei students," said Delon Hon, 1 Keele's representative for the sultanate.

"Of all new Brunei students coming to the UK this year, roughly I in 8 chose Keele University as their preferred choice.

"And among that large group, 80 percent opted to do Dual Honours degree."

Another reason for Keele's attraction for Brunei students is its sensitivity to the needs of Muslim students. Surau facilities are available on campus for both male and female students, and most meat dishes served are "halal." Keele also arranges for a bus to ferry new Brunei students from Brunei Hall to the campus, thus saving them time as well as worries of lost baggage.

Helena Thorley, the academic registrar at Keele, and Gill Coleman, its admissions manager, of Keele University will be at James Hon's office today until tomorrow to meet prospective students. More information is available from Mr Hon at telephone number 2230198, or through fax at number 2230199.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
