By Lene Fong

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Mid-Autumn Festival is sometimes known as the Harvest; Festival. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Lunar calendar. This festival is celebrated all around the world, not only by the Chinese community, but also the Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese.

In Brunei, it is celebrated mainly by the Chinese community to mark the Mooncake Festival. This year's celebration will fall on October 6.

This has been a popular Chinese celebration that dates back to over 3,000 years. There are different legends associated with the celebration. One of the famous stories is about a beautiful young lady called 'Chang Er'. Another Chinese legend is related to the celebration of the fall of the Mongols during the end of the Yuan Dynasty in China during 1280-1368AD.

Hence, the Mooncake Festival symbolises a celebration of peace and shared prosperity among the Chinese community, where they would normally hold family gatherings to mark the occasion. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
