High-Speed Chase Ends In Meat Haul
By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - An attempt to smuggle nearly 400 kilogrammes of meat of dubious halal quality, the biggest amount so far this year, was foiled by the country's enforcement officers Tuesday night.

The Muara Marine police succeeded in busting the attempt to smuggle 3 78kg of beef under the cover of darkness.

Four Marine police personnel were on their routine patrol at around Tanjung Cindana and Pulau Cermin in Brunei waters Tuesday night at around 10.55pm when they received a public tip-off about a suspicious activity in the area.

The police acted swiftly and traced the boat. When they ordered the driver of the boat to stop for inspection and questioning, the man sped off ensuing in a high-speed chase.

The man rammed his boat into the jetty of Kg Jampang in Kota Batu, jumped out and disappeared into darkness despite the police giving him a chase. The police found 21 packets of the illicit meat each weighing 18kg in the boat. The meat and boat were confiscated for further investigation.

The Marine police said they will continue to patrol Brunei waters to ensure that no smuggling or other undesirable activities are conducted.

The police called on the public to provide information if they come across any suspicious activity to the nearest law enforcement agency.

Smugglers are making a fast buck by bringing in an Indian brand of meat sold in the neighbouring country at $4 a kg compared to Brunei where beef is sold at $10 a kg.

The Marine Police continues to foil smuggling activities around Brunei waters and seizes contraband including beer, liquor, chicken meat, cigarettes with no Brunei health warning and even petrol, a controlled item in Brunei.   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
