Six SOS Calls Since Jan 2006
By Achong Tanjong
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Since the beginning of the year, the Fire & Rescue
Department in the Temburong District has received six emergency calls
related to home fires and recorded an estimated loss worth $763,000
caused by such fires.
The figure was yesterday revealed by
Temburong District Fire & Rescue Department `G' Operation Branch
Commanding Officer Awang Othman Jailani during the 'Rampai Pagi' TV
programme.
Based on the population and number of
houses in the district, the six emergency calls received are
considered to be the highest, he said.
In a attempt to reduce fire related
incidence and simultaneously educate the people in Temburong District
on fire prevention, the `G' Operation Branch is conducting a Fire
Awareness Safety Campaign.
The campaign - which will tomorrow be
launched at the Amo Longhouse by Acting Temburong District Officer -
will include talks highlighting the aspects of fire safety prevention
at homes.
Human carelessness is generally to be
blamed for home fires. This includes leaving the cooking unattended
and poor maintenance of electrical wirings.
The aim of the campaign is to educate
the local community on the importance of having fire prevention skills
and taking proactive steps towards future risks, he said.
The campaign will target all levels
of society. It will see the participation of penghulus, ketua kampungs,
and residents in the district.
Participants will also be shown the
different types of equipment used in fighting fires.
During the campaign, the `G'
Operation Branch will team up with the Electrical Department to
explain to the participants how poorly maintained electrical wirings
could prove disastrous.
Following the talks, a question and
answer session will be held, involving other agencies including the
police, Ministry of Health and the public works (water section).
The campaign will end in January
