RBAF Officers Join Junior Staff Course
By James Kon

Bandar Seri Begawan - Twenty officers of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) are currently taking part in the Second Junior Staff Course (JSC) for the year 2006 following the opening ceremony yesterday. The course was launched and is being held at the Civil Service Institute in Jln Rimba.

The tri-service JSC is a two-month full-day intensive training course that commenced yesterday and ends December 1, 2006. The pilot course is part of a programme of development in armed forces human resources capability and professional competencies to face growing future challenges.

The course is designed to develop mid-grade officers with knowledge, skills and attitude to become staff or executive officers. Unlike combatant officers, being a staff officer is another career exposure off the field. It also challenges officers' abilities to think and discuss general issues and later put in writing.

The two-month intensive course will involve relatively gruelling hours of training in reading and writing techniques. Along with operational and non-operational lectures, the participants will also be assessed on their individual and group presentation skills. Important subjects that will be covered include leadership, management, communication and operational planning. The JSC will be conducted under the guidance and supervision of Lt Colonel BK Rawat and his directing staff as well as guest presenters.

Officiating the opening ceremony as guest of honour was the Commander of the Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF), Colonel Pg Dato Paduka Hj Rosli bin Pg Hj Chuchu. Also in attendance at the ceremony were Awg Hj Junaidi bin Hi Omar, Commandant Training Institute RBAF, Deputy Service Commanders and Commandants, Directing Staff and officers of the RBAF.

"His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in his titah during RBAF's 43`d Anniversary in 2004 highlighted that `People are the main asset of the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, and their faith, training and motivation are the foundation towards achieving success. The RBAF must undergo a transformation in leadership and mindset that is more open towards new methods of defence'," said the guest of honoa_ in his opening remarks.

"The establishment of the JSC is a direct result of His Majesty's personal wishes. Striving to meet personal objectives which include `Being the Best You Can Be' is also in line with His Majesty's wishes," added Col Pg Dato Paduka Hj Rosli.

In regards to the importance of training, the Commander of the Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF) said "Defence is a serious and at times inevitably dangerous business. As officers we are in the position of being responsible for the safety of our nation. To achieve this effectively we must invest in all our officers by providing them with the essential training and educational opportunities that will ensure that they can, and will carry out all their tasks professionally and efficiently."

He further said that the JSC is one of the key training and education building blocks for the officer corps. "The package you will participate in has been designed by the RBAF, in order to meet RBAF's specific needs and is a significant development for Brunei Darussalam," he said.

The guest of honour also hoped that by the end of the course, participants would have gained a clearer understanding of their own strengths and identified possible areas of improvement for their own personal, self-development.

"A key point to remember is that only by practising what you have learned will you be able to fulfill His Majesty's expectations of both you as an individual and of the RBAF as an organisation," he said. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
