Teaching Quality Under E
Microscope At Forum
By P. Marilyn & Za'im Zaini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Over 100 educators in the country attended a
Teacher's Day Forum, organised by the Primary Education Section,
Ministry of Education, in conjunction with the 1611 Teacher's Day
celebrations, at Dewan Pencapaian, Civil Service Institute in Rimba.
Prior to the commencement of the
forum, Assistant Director of Primary Education Section Cikgu Hj Abd
Aji bin Hj Ishak delivered a speech and advised the teachers to make
early preparations for next school year.
He also stressed on the importance of
helping the students become proactive learners as well as touched on
the Proposed Organisational Structure of the Schools Department for
2007.
The forum, entitled "Teachers with
Quality Increase Competitiveness of the Nation", was chaired by Pg
Othman bin Pg Karim, while members of the panel included Hjh Noorzinah
binti Hj Hassan of Brunei-Muara District's Zone I and III, Hj Suhaili
bin Hj Jaafar of Brunei-Muara District's Zone II and IV, Hjh Rosini
binti Hj Yusof of Tutong District, Nor Zurina binti Hj Assim of Belait
District and Hj Siasa bin Tambah of Temburong District.
Among the objectives of the forum
were to seek improvement in general knowledge and issues relating to
education, to share creative approaches to teaching, and to exchange
ideas on the necessary standards of teaching in order to improve the
nation's competitiveness.
According to Hj Suhaili, a teaching
job is an honourable profession and teachers should not lose interest
in teaching. To turn a child into a good student not only depends upon
the teaching quality of the teacher but also other influential factors
such as parents and society.
Meanwhile, Nor Zurina said in primary
education, there is a need to instil knowledge on Brunei and an
interest in reading, while Hj Noorzinah noted that last year's Primary
Certificate of Examination results were by far the best.
Hj
Siasa, who touched on the importance of co-curriculum, believed
teachers must have a vision and posses’ ability to spot talent, while
Cikgu Hj Rosini said commitment is the key to attaining success.
Following the forum, Cikgu Hj Abd Aji
presented certificates to the members of the panel and prizes to the
participants of last month's Reading Carnival at Masin Secondary
School.
The best exhibition booth went to
Temburong District, followed by schools in Zone I of Brunei-Muara
District and Belait District.
The event concluded with a
presentation of a book of guidelines for primary school principals to
the chairman of the organising committee as well as principals and
assistant principals throughout the country.
