Japanese Koi Lovers Hold Inaugural
Contest

Begawan - A Japanese Koi measuring 76cm owned by Paul Koh
emerged as grand champion in the 1s' Japanese Koi competition held at
Sykt Biotropical Fish Shop, Kg Bunut yesterday.
With the theme "Living Jewel Show
2006," the event received an overwhelming response, attracting large
crowds of spectators and the participation of 20 Japanese Koi keepers
who showcased some 200 Japanese Koi of various species.
The competition was organised by a
group of Japanese Koi lovers to promote the hobby of rearing the fish
and foster closer ties among them.
The competition also provided an
opportunity for the Japanese Koi keepers to share their views and
experiences on looking after the fish.
The fish were judged by two experts -
Mr Vincent Wong from Kepong Aquarium (M) Sdn Bhd in Malaysia, and Mr
Tseng Chung Hsu from Mishikigoi & Art Co Ltd of Taiwan.
Mr
Vincent Wong said the judging was based on three important elements
that included the quality of fish scales, body shape and colourful
design on the body. ,
Mr
Paul Koh, said he has joined competitions in Asia including Japan and
Malaysia.
So far, his best achievement was as
second runner-up at a Malaysian competition held in June 2006. He said
in Malaysia, the Japanese Koi competition standards are very high.
He starts rearing the fish as a hobby
after being introduced by his friend. Now, he has 71 Japanese Koi fish
in his pond. He spends between $500 and $600 per month on fish food
and maintenance such as on water quality.
Brunei has a vast potential to breed
the Japanese Koi fish due to its good location; said Mr Vincent Wong.
The organising committee's vice
president, Mr Robert Lee said the contest received an encouraging
response not only from participants but also from the general public
who flocked to witness the event.
The organisers are looking forward to
holding the competition as an annual event to promote the hobby of
rearing Japanese Koi.
The contest was divided into several
categories - Grand Champion, Mature Champion, Baby Champion, Young
Champion, Mature Champion, Jumbo "A" and Jumbo "B" Champion. -- Courtesy of Borneo
