Public Apathy At Belait Ramadhan
Stalls
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - During the month of Ramadhan, it is an usual sight to
see members of the public buying food to break their fast at Tudong
Saji Ramadhan Stall and Pasarneka Seria, set up by Belait and Seria
Municipal Board.
Unfortunately, a few private Ramadhan
stalls, organised by associations, nongovernmental organisations and
authorised clubs, have received very little response.
There are possibilites that the
public are not aware of the existence ofthese stalls due to little
public exposure or the small number of participating vendors.
During Borneo Bulletin's observation
of a Ramadhan stall at WismaYakin building in Kampong Pandan Lima
Belait, a few visitors and stall operators were seen.
According to a stall operator, he
only prepares a few food items for sale as he is afraid that he will
not be able to sell them all.
Apart from that, there are also other
stalls at the parking lot of Brunei Shell Recreational Club in Panaga
where a fair number of stall operators are preparing, not only
traditional kuehs and various dishes, but also decorated flowers and
dry foods for the upcoming Hari Raya celebration.
A stall operator at BSRC said that he
received only a few visitors and very little response, but hoped that
the general public will flock to the area when the Hari Raya
Aidilfitri celebration draws nearer.
In addition to that a car exhibition
is also being held there. Running stalls at different areas by
authorised organisers are aimed to open up opportunities for stall
holders to showcase their products which benefits small and medium
businesses with extremely affordable rentals.
However, it is vital that organisers
also assist in making the area a public attraction and should probably
hold side events to enliven the atmosphere particularly during the
weekends. -- Courtesy of Borneo
